This week marks the launch of the website of an exciting project : 9 Urban Biotopes, for which CUCR forms the academic and evaluation partner. http://www.urban-biotopes.net
Urban Biotopes is a cross border socially engaged art project working in Africa and the EU which aims to establish a ‘trans-local dialogue’ on ‘social urban sustainability’ by interweaving and connecting new context-specific, socially engaged art projects into the existing social activities of participating biotopes in nine cities. The project brings together social initiatives, citizens’ organizations and art institutions in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, London, Paris, Turin and Berlin.
This week also sees the beginning of several art projects within 9UB:
Marjetica Potrč and her students transform public spaces in Soweto into community hubs. At the same time Athi-Patra Ruga works with members of the Youth Theatre Office in Berlin on a performance around the question of identity and Antje Schiffers educates herself with regard to how everyday life is in Cape Town is made manageable.
